Repair the Breach
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7
Prayer is something that is often made out to be difficult. In its purest form it is simply having a conversation with God. The key word is conversation. A conversation is as much about what you hear as it is what you say. Hearing God sounds so ominous at first and to the world it often seems strange.
For the beginner in prayer, it’s important to have a clear understanding that God wants to talk with you. His voice will most often sound like your head voice, since He is communicating to you in your thoughts, rarely do people hear the audible voice of God. So, the leap for those beginning this journey is trusting that you’re not just hearing your own thoughts. In part, this will always be a leap of faith.
You need to trust that God will protect your hearing when you are submitted to Him.
So just begin, my suggestion to people wanting to hear the voice of God is multi-faceted. To know what God is saying you must have a regular interaction with what He has already said. The Bible is the top authority in hearing God’s voice. To read it is to hear Him speak. Secondly, get to know His presence. Start your prayer life in two areas. Firstly, learn to just be in His presence. Some people use worship music to help be present in His presence. Secondly, share your heart, your needs, and your confessions with Him.
The next step to hearing God’s voice is crucial. Know how God talks,
not just what God has said. Shame and guilt in our lives will try to separate us from God and tell us things about our heavenly Father that are just not true; God does not talk to us by using shame and guilt. We will feel conviction when we do something wrong but that feels very different, conviction’s purpose is to draw us nearer. God always makes a way for us to come closer to Him. It may require repentance for our hearts to feel we can engage with God again, but He always wants to spend time with you.
If you are a seasoned Christian with years of experience in prayer and are struggling, have you reset your mindset lately? Have you flushed out the lies that have maybe got in and are separating you from hearing? It’s not that God is mad at you and is not speaking. It’s often because there is so much guilt, shame or lies in the way that we can’t hear what He is saying. He is speaking, we just need our minds to be cleaned out. So, take time to make some confessions. “Holy Spirit, I am struggling to hear what the Father is saying, in what ways have I allowed shame or guilt or the lies of the enemy to clog up my hearing. Forgive me for believing these lies. Will you show me what’s in the way.”
When He shows you something, don’t brood over it or allow frustration to enter in, just take responsibility for what is revealed to you, ask for forgiveness, and then walk closer. Don’t wait, spend time listening to Him in that moment, and see the difference.
Remember, the Father is always speaking; we either have not yet learned His voice, or we have lies that have clogged up our thoughts. Flush them out.
Prayer: Lord I believe you want to speak with me today in prayer. I ask you to show me the areas where guilt of shame or the lies from the difficulty of life or the lies of the enemy are clogging up my hearing. I beleive you are always speaking and I'm ready to hear.
