Perseverance wins again. Kurt Warner won Superbowl 34 beating the Tennessee Titans 23-16, but it almost never happened.
Kurt had been cut by two teams in the mid 90’s. He ended up working for his local department store stocking shelves.
He began playing for the Arena Bowl, a step down from the NFL in 1995. There he became an all-star in 1996 and 1997.
Warner was given another shot with the NFL’s, St. Louis Rams in 1998 because of his standout performances in the Arena League.  However, the Rams sent him down to the European Football league, another demotion. There he led the league in passing yards and touchdowns. In 1999 warner made the Ram’s again, but as the second-string quarterback. However, he never gave up. The starting quarterback was out due to injury and Kurt led the Rams to a winning season ending in that Super Bowl 34 win. Kurt often credits his faith and family for his perseverance.
Can you imagine if Kurt would have allowed discouragement and disappointment to make his descions?
What a loss that would have been !

THINK:  Can you think of a time when:

  • You didn’t persevere when you should have? What was the cost of giving up?
  • You persevered in the face of difficulty? What was the reward?

REFLECT: Perseverance is hard. If it wasn’t, everyone would do it. Take a minute and reflect on these quotes:

  • “It always seems impossible until it is done.”-Nelson Mandela
  • “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”-Winston Churchill
  • “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.” - Thomas Edison

ACTIVATE:  This activation is two-fold.

  1. Ask someone in your thrive group to keep you accountable. Tell them why you need thrive groups and why you might need encouragement to continue.
  2. What area of your life do you need to persevere in. Is it your relationship with a family member or a friend. Is it your job or maybe just a bucket list trip you have the money to do but have been putting it off.

PRAY/COMMIT: Declare this prayer:

"I will not get weary or disheartened in planting good seeds, for the season of reaping the wonderful harvest I've planted is coming!” Galatians 6:9 TPT
